PLAY ADDRESSES PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE ISSUES

AMERICAN PREMIERE

Six Actors in Search of a Plot has been invited to premiere in New York as an offering of The Culture Project’s first annual Culture Project/Impact Festival. As an extension of Culture Project's past successes with productions such as The Exonerated, Guantánamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom, Sarah Jones Bridge & Tunnel, and RFK, an annual arts festival focused on human rights, social justice and political action will be launched in September and October 2006.

The play, co-written by Palestinian Muslim playwright Muhammed Ahmad Zaher and American Jewish director/choreographer Billy Yalowitz, combines unexpected humor and hopeful irony to bring a much-needed fresh perspective to peace-building efforts between Israel’s Arab and Jewish populations. Discussion sessions accompanying the performances will encourage audiences to reflect on how the conflict touches their own lives.

Performances in New York are at the Nagelberg Theatre of the Baruch College Performing Arts Center at 55 Lexington Avenue @ 25th Street (between Lexington & 3rd Avenues). Tickets will be available through The Culture Project Box Office at 45 Bleecker Street in New York City (phone 212-307-4100) and through Ticketmaster. Performances are Thurs, Sept 28, Fri, Sept 29, Sat, Sept 30 (matinee and evening), Sun, Oct 1 (matinee at 2 pm), Tues, Oct 3, Wed, Oct 4, Thurs, Oct 5, Fri, Oct 6, Sat, Oct 7, Sun, Oct 8. All performances are at 8:00 pm, unless otherwise specified.

Six Actors in Search of a Plot premiered in Jerusalem in January 2006. The Jerusalem Post commented that the piece sparks creative thinking about how Jews and Arabs can transcend their divergent historical narratives to create a better shared future: “...after a viewing of the unconventional project it’s inevitable that [the audience] will start talking.” The New York Times observed that the play “explores not only themes of illusion and reality, but also ways that truth is distorted...during the first five days of rehearsals...the Palestinian and Jewish actors argued about nearly every line.”

The play takes its title from Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author.  The storyline combines two distinct themes –the birth of two nations, and the difficulty of finding workable ground for communication. In the absence of an agreed-upon plot, three Palestinian and three Jewish Israeli actors try desperately to find some common human story that they can agree to tell which might somehow transcend the pervasiveness of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.  The actors propose a series of plots that seem politically neutral, but politics filters into and eventually overturns each plot idea.

The production is a co-production between Temple University and Peace Child Israel and is sponsored, in part by EED, The Abraham Fund Initiatives and The Alan B. Slifka Family Foundation

Who

Peace Child Israel is the pioneer and veteran of coexistence programs through the medium of theatre for Arab and Jewish teenagers. In 1988, the late Habima Theatre actress Yael Drouyanoff formed an NGO with members of the Arab and Jewish community, with the help of David Gordon, co-founder of Peace Child International. Teenagers from neighboring communities meet weekly and conclude their first year of activity by writing and performing original plays in Arabic and Hebrew. They continue as young leaders by performing their plays for school audiences. Groups are co-facilitated by Arab and Jewish professionals from the field of theatre and social work. The PCI Board of Directors is comprised of Arab and Jewish individuals from the field of social work, education, communication and finances. Peace Child Israel is a registered “amuta” and receives “correct management” status annually. Since inception, Peace Child has grown from one workshop in Jaffa to a nation-wide organization, reaching a record 11 workshops in the 2005-2006 cycle. In 2001, parents of participants were added to the circle of activity.
