Sharon: The tiger is smiling

Defying pollsters and media pundits, Israeli PM Ariel Sharon survived the vote for early primaries, intended to oust him, in the Likud Central Committee. Bibi Nethanyahu and his friends went for a ride on a tiger. They came back from the ride with Bibi decidedly outside, and the smile on the face of the tiger. [more]

Karen Hughes and American Muslims: Alliance against Extremism

The religious leader declared, "The hurricane is God's punishment on George Bush." The religious leader was not an Islamist extremist in this case. It was our very own "Kvod Harav" (his honor the Rabbi) Ovadia Yosef, the venerable "spiritual leader" of the Shas party. [more]

The Palestinians are burning their future

Israel is out of Gaza, and Palestinians have a chance to show how they establish orderly government and an orderly society. Up to now, the demonstration has not been too encouraging. Where were the Palestinian security forces? It seems they were contributing to the mayhem. Palestinians claim that the security forces were involved in the murder of Moussa Arafat. [more]

The Israel press and disengagement

The current Columbia Journalism Review (September-October 2005) presents a long article by Gal Beckerman about the Israel press and disengagement.

Beckerman's thesis is that is that the press looked the other way to enable Sharon to pull off the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza. Beckerman writes that, "by avoiding certain troubling questions, by not looking too far into the future, by never really dissecting Sharon's deeper motives or long-range strategy, Israel's press helped turn a poorly articulated national undertaking into an inevitability."

The publishers call Beckerman's piece "a psychological portrait of an Israeli press that, at a critical historical moment, simply stopped asking questions."

The piece contains noteworthy material, but some of Beckerman's judgments are off the mark. Here are comments on three aspects --- quotes, judgments, and some errors of fact. [more]
