In his speech of last night, George W. Bush began to show his age. The presidency of the United States tends to take a visible toll on the occupants of the office, and Bush is no exception. Yet his face, made up for the cameras, still seemed preternaturally youthful. [more]

What Bush told Americans about Iraq, and himself
Unlike Don Rumsfeld, George W. Bush doesn't believe that the U.S. has so far failed to bring the war in Iraq to a successful close. He believes that we already have done so. The twist is that, in a sequel of sorts, "the terrorists" have decided to challenge us there, lest our success transform the Middle East and leave no room for their kind. Iraq is now the "central front" in the War on Terrorism. And we will bear any burden, pay any price to win. Sacrifice is the order of the day, starting with an $87 billion downpayment. [more]

At the brink of the abyss
Today it may seem like just the latest in a series of terrorist atrocities perpetrated by America's shadowy, faceless enemies in Iraq. But in the months to come, the massacre at the Shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf also may loom in our minds as the beginning of the end.
