Disillusion - Seniora says Lebanon will be last country to make peace with Israel08/30/2006 It was nice while it lasted. For a while there, it looked like Lebanese PM Fuad Seniora might be hinting at a peace offer to Israel. Bloggers like Andrew Sullivan got all excited. Israeli officials responded quickly, and repeated their hopes for peace again. But Seniora wasn't interested in peace. He said:
This was in response to PM Olmert's earlier statements, and the one he made today, stating that a cease-fire would be:
Seniora isn't haviing any. Just to make sure everyone got the message, he also said:
That upsets a venerable Israeli foreign relations adage, which claimed that Lebanon would be the second Arab country (well ok, the third) to make peace with Israel. Fuad Seniora heads the "fragile" Lebanese "democracy" that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is trying so hard to support. Perhaps if American and French support for Seniora was somewhat less unconditional, maybe if the UN prodded him a bit, and maybe if everyone provided him with better insulation from "sister Syria, he might possibly be a bit more inclined to make peace with Israel. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

Replies: 3 comments How could any country that has been the victim the humiliating war criminal attack that Israel has visited on Lebanon possibly want peace with her? Perhaps if the United States supported Israel less unconditionally, and Israel were less interested in controlling Lebanon's water and destroying it as an economic competitor, Lebanon could consider peace. The Lebanese are human beings, which you seem to forget. Your tears Amy Isseroff are crocodile tears. Posted by George Joseph @ 08/30/2006 10:43 PM CST Ok Ami, Tomorrow, just for you and your war mongering Israeli buddies, the US will break Seniora's legs nad make him cry for his mommy while chanting a thousand apologies for not smiling while he was taking it up the arse from you people. Will that make you happy?? We support the Lebaneese government because it is a stepping stone tword democracy in the region. Democracy, something your people aren't too keen on either. AIPAC asked the US to shut down an Iranian site why? Because they were practicing what we here in the US like to call, freedom of speech. Unlike you Ami, most of us Americans value truth and our freedoms, even if we don't like how someone else expresses those freedoms. We also know compassion for our enemies. There are few of us in the US that hold contempt for the Iraqi people. We know we F'd up. Take the blinders off and gaze upon your handy work. Israel F'd up...no matter how you turn or twist it. Posted by OMFG @ 08/30/2006 11:53 PM CST This seems to be based on a misreading of Seniora's original comments. My understanding of what he said was that if ISRAEL used its collective head and decided to pursue the path of negotiations rather than violence then there could be peace. I would guess on the basis that this latest orgy of violence actually achieved none of Israel's aims. He place the onus on Israel to learn the lessons and make the peace offer - based I would guess on the recent Arab League proposals. He would certainly not be about to negotiate a separate peace treaty with Israel under the present conditions. Incidentally, it seems Nasrallah has appeared on Lebanese TV saying that Hezbollah would not have grabbed the soldiers if they had known what would result. No doubt that was partially aimed at mollifying non-Shi'ite Lebanese, but an interesting admission all the same and far from the usual Arab braggadocio.
