Osama Bin Laden's Latest tape- October 2004

11/04/2004

There are no real surprises in Osama Bin Laden's latest tape, aired last week by Al-Jazeera television and reproduced below. While his previous tape Bin-Ladin warned Muslims of danger and called for unity and action in the face of the American threat, his latest tape, released just in time for the US elections (and Halloween) was a somewhat premature announcment of victory.

According to Osama, he is winning by bankrupting the United States:

All that we have to do is to send two Mujahideen to the furthest point East to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al-Qaida, in order to make the generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic, and political losses without their achieving for it anything of note other than some benefits for their private companies.

... we, alongside the Mujahideen, bled Russia for ten years, until it went bankrupt and was forced to withdraw in defeat.

All Praise is due to Allah.

So we are continuing this policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy. Allah willing, and nothing is too great for Allah.

A characteristic of this tape is that Bin-Laden turns the favorite Bush themes of the war on terror on their head, producing a mirror image of American statements and thinking:

... security is an indispensable pillar of human life and that free men do not forfeit their security...

No-one except a dumb thief plays with the security of others and then makes himself believe he will be secure.

Those quotes could be taken from a Bush speech or a US State Department briefing.

Palestine and Israel figured peripherally in previous Bin Laden rhetoric, but assumed a more prominent role in the current message:

I say to you, Allah knows that it had never occurred to us to strike the towers. But after it became unbearable and we witnessed the oppression and tyranny of the American/Israeli coalition against our people in Palestine and Lebanon, it came to my mind.

The events that affected my soul in a direct way started in 1982 when America permitted the Israelis to invade Lebanon and the American Sixth Fleet helped them in that. This bombardment began and many were killed and injured and others were terrorized and displaced.

I couldn't forget those moving scenes, blood and severed limbs, women and children sprawled everywhere. Houses destroyed along with their occupants and high rises demolished over their residents, rockets raining down on our home without mercy.

The situation was like a crocodile meeting a helpless child, powerless except for his screams. Does the crocodile understand a conversation that doesn't include a weapon? And the whole world saw and heard but it didn't respond.

In those difficult moments many hard-to-describe ideas bubbled in my soul, but in the end they produced an intense feeling of rejection of tyranny, and gave birth to a strong resolve to punish the oppressors.

And as I looked at those demolished towers in Lebanon, it entered my mind that we should punish the oppressor in kind and that we should destroy towers in America in order that they taste some of what we tasted and so that they be deterred from killing our women and children.

And that day, it was confirmed to me that oppression and the intentional killing of innocent women and children is a deliberate American policy. Destruction is freedom and democracy, while resistance is terrorism and intolerance.

Not many real towers were destroyed in Beirut, and Bin Laden never mentioned Lebanon in previous speeches, so the reference is a bit bizarre. Though Osama Bin Laden has mentioned Israel and Palestine before, it was always in the context of the Palestinian struggle, Israeli acts against Palestinians, and above all, Israeli occupation of the wholly city of Jerusalem, as in his Fatwa of 1996:

Your brothers in Palestine and in the land of the two Holy Places are calling upon your help and asking you to take part in fighting against the enemy -your enemy and their enemy- the Americans and the Israelis. They are asking you to do whatever you can, with your own means and ability, to expel the enemy, humiliated and defeated, out of the sanctities of Islam.

...And the Zionist Jews fiddling as they wish with the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the route of the ascendance of the messenger of Allah (ALLAH'S BLESSING AND SALUTATIONS ON HIM).

It is pointless to try to seek evidence for the real motives of the 9-11 attack in this manipulative message. No sensible person can really believe that Osama Bin Laden, in Lebanon in the 1980s, planned even then to attack the United States and destroy the Twin Towers in 2001 because Israel had destroyed some buildings in Beirut. Every Muslim and pan-Arab ideologue and politician cannot neglect the Palestinian issue, and it is certain that many many Palestinians look up to Bin-Laden, but the "real" motives for the attack cannot be extracted from this tape any more than we can expect any other real information from Bin Laden.

Following is the full English transcript of Osama bin Ladin's speech in a videotape sent to Aljazeera, uncut and uncensored.

We remind our viewers that the statements, opinions and points of view expressed in this article are those of the author and shall not be deemed to mean that they are necessarily those of Jihad Unspun, the publisher, editor, writers, contributors or staff.
Praise be to Allah who created the creation for his worship and commanded them to be just and permitted the wronged one to retaliate against the oppressor in kind. To proceed:

Peace be upon he who follows the guidance: People of America this talk of mine is for you and concerns the ideal way to prevent another Manhattan, and deals with the war and its causes and results.

Before I begin, I say to you that security is an indispensable pillar of human life and that free men do not forfeit their security, contrary to Bush's claim that we hate freedom. If so, then let him explain to us why we don't strike for example – Sweden? And we know that freedom-haters don't possess defiant spirits like those of the 19 – may Allah have mercy on them.

No, we fight because we are free men who don't sleep under oppression. We want to restore freedom to our nation, just as you lay waste to our nation. So shall we lay waste to yours.

No-one except a dumb thief plays with the security of others and then makes himself believe he will be secure. Whereas thinking people, when disaster strikes, make it their priority to look for its causes, in order to prevent it happening again.

But I am amazed at you. Even though we are in the fourth year after the events of September 11th, Bush is still engaged in distortion, deception and hiding from you the real causes. And thus, the reasons are still there for a repeat of what occurred.

So I shall talk to you about the story behind those events and shall tell you truthfully about the moments in which the decision was taken, for you to consider.

This means the oppressing and embargoing to death of millions as Bush Sr. did in Iraq in the greatest mass slaughter of children mankind has ever known, and it means the throwing of millions of pounds of bombs and explosives at millions of children – also in Iraq – as Bush Jr. [d]id, in order to remove an old agent and replace him with a new puppet to assist in the pilfering of Iraq's oil and other outrages.

So with these images and their like as their background, the events of September 11th came as a reply to those great wrongs, should a man be blamed for defending his sanctuary?

Is defending oneself and punishing the aggressor in kind, objectionable terrorism? If it is such, then it is unavoidable for us.

This is the message which I sought to communicate to you in word and deed, repeatedly, for years before September 11th.

And you can read this, if you wish, in my interview with Scott in Time Magazine in 1996, or with Peter Arnett on CNN in 1997, or my meeting with John Weiner in 1998.

You can observe it practically, if you wish, in Kenya and Tanzania and in Aden. And you can read it in my interview with Abdul Bari Atwan, as well as my interviews with Robert Fisk.

The latter is one of your compatriots and co-religionists and I consider him to be neutral. So are the pretenders of freedom at The White House and the channels controlled by them able to run an interview with him? So that he may relay to the American people what he has understood from us to be the reasons for our fight against you?

If you were to avoid these reasons, you will have taken the correct path that will lead America to the security that it was in before September 11th. This concerned the causes of the war.

As for its results, they have been, by the grace of Allah, positive and enormous, and have, by all standards, exceeded all expectations. This is due to many factors, chief amongst them, that we have found it [not] difficult to deal with the Bush administration in light of the resemblance it bears to the regimes in our countries, half of which are ruled by the military and the other half which are ruled by the sons of kings and presidents.

Our experience with them is lengthy, and both types are replete with those who are characterized by pride, arrogance, greed and misappropriation of wealth. This resemblance began after the visits of Bush Sr. to the region.

At a time when some of our compatriots were dazzled by America and hoping that these visits would have an effect on our countries, all of a sudden he was affected by those monarchies and military regimes, and became envious of their remaining decades in their positions, to embezzle the public wealth of the nation without supervision or accounting.

So he took dictatorship and suppression of freedoms to his son and they named it the Patriot Act, under the pretense of fighting terrorism. In addition, Bush sanctioned the installing of sons as state governors, and didn't forget to import expertise in election fraud from the region's presidents to Florida to be made use of in moments of difficulty.

All that we have mentioned has made it easy for us to provoke and bait this administration. All that we have to do is to send two Mujahideen to the furthest point East to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al-Qaida, in order to make the generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic, and political losses without their achieving for it anything of note other than some benefits for their private companies.

This is in addition to our having experience in using guerrilla warfare and the war of attrition to fight tyrannical superpowers, as we, alongside the Mujahideen, bled Russia for ten years, until it went bankrupt and was forced to withdraw in defeat.

All Praise is due to Allah.

So we are continuing this policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy. Allah willing, and nothing is too great for Allah.

That being said, those who say that al-Qaida has won against the administration in the White House or that the administration has lost in this war have not been precise, because when one scrutinizes the results, one cannot say that al-Qaida is the sole factor in achieving those spectacular gains.

Rather, the policy of the White House that demands the opening of war fronts to keep busy their various corporations – whether they be working in the field of arms or oil or reconstruction – has helped al-Qaida to achieve these enormous results.

And so it has appeared to some analysts and diplomats that the White House and us are playing as one team towards the economic goals of the United States, even if the intentions differ.

And it was to these sorts of notions and their like that the British diplomat and others were referring in their lectures at the Royal Institute of International Affairs. (When they pointed out that) for example, al-Qaida spent $500 000 on the event, while America, in the incident and its aftermath, lost – according to the lowest estimate – more than 500 billion dollars.

Meaning that every dollar of al-Qaida defeated a million dollars by the permission of Allah, besides the loss of a huge number of jobs.

As for the size of the economic deficit, it has reached record astronomical numbers estimated to total more than a trillion dollars.

And even more dangerous and bitter for America is that the Mujahideen recently forced Bush to resort to emergency funds to continue the fight in Afghanistan and Iraq, which is evidence of the success of the blee[d]-until-bankruptcy plan – with Allah's permission.

It is true that this shows that al-Qaida has gained, but on the other hand, it shows that the Bush administration has also gained, something of which anyone who looks at the size of the contracts acquired by the shady Bush administration-linked mega-corporations, like Haliburton and its kind, will be convinced. And it all shows that the real loser is...you.

It is the American people and their economy. And for the record, we had agreed with the Commander-General Muhammad Ataa, Allah have mercy on him, that all the operations should be carried out within twenty minutes, before Bush and his administration notice.

It never occurred to us that the commander-in-chief of the American armed forces would abandon 50 000 of his citizens in the twin towers to face those great horrors alone, the time when they most needed him.

But because it seemed to him that occupying himself by talking to the little girl about the goat and its butting was more important than occupying himself with the planes and their butting of the skyscrapers. We were given three times the period required to execute the operations – All Praise is Due to Allah.

And it's no secret to you that the thinkers and perceptive ones from among the Americans warned Bush before the war and told him, "All that you want for securing America and removing the weapons of mass destruction – assuming they exist – is available to you, and the nations of the world are with you in the inspections, and it is in the interest of America that it not be thrust into an unjustified war with an unknown outcome."

But the darkness of the black gold blurred his vision and insight, and he gave priority to private interests over the public interests of America.

So the war went ahead, the death toll rose, the American economy bled, and Bush became embroiled in the swamps of Iraq that threaten his future. He fits the saying, "Like the naughty she-goat who used her hoof to dig up a knife from under the earth"

So I say to you, over 15 000 of our people have been killed and tens of thousands injured, while more than a thousand of you have been killed and more than 10 000 injured. And Bush's hands are stained with the blood of all those killed from both sides, all for the sake of oil and keeping their private companies in business.

Be aware that it is the nation who punishes the weak man when he causes the killing of one of its citizens for money, while letting the powerful one get off, when he causes the killing of more than 1000 of its sons, also for money.

And the same goes for your allies in Palestine. They terrorize the women and children, and kill and capture the men as they lie sleeping with their families on the mattresses, that you may recall that for every action, there is a reaction.

Finally, it behooves you to reflect on the last wills and testaments of the thousands who left you on the 11th as they gestured in despair. They are important testaments, which should be studied and researched.

Among the most important of what I read in them was some prose in their gestures before the collapse, where they say, "How mistaken we were to have allowed the White House to implement its aggressive foreign policies against the weak without supervision." It is as if they were telling you, the people of America, "Hold to account those who have caused us to be killed, and happy is he who learns from others' mistakes," And among that which I read in their gestures is a verse of poetry, "Injustice chases its people, and how unhealthy the bed of tyranny."

As has been said, "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure."

And know that, "It is better to return to the truth than persist in error." And that the wise man doesn't squander his security, wealth and children for the sake of the liar in the White House.

In conclusion, I tell you in truth, that your security is not in the hands of Kerry, nor Bush, nor al-Qaida.
No.

Your security is in your own hands. And every state that doesn't play with our security has automatically guaranteed its own security.

And Allah is our Guardian and Helper, while you have no Guardian or Helper. All Peace be Upon he who follows the Guidance.

Could it be that the "towers" Bin Laden refers to are Sabra and Shatila?

Posted by Jim @ 11/07/2004 07:28 PM CST

I feel very torn while reading this. I see, on the one hand, a ruthless murderer, on the other, a man protecting not only himself but his countrymen and those that share his religious beliefs by striking those that would do his brothers and sisters harm. His actions are retalliation for a self righteous policy we, the American state, ennacted and continue to pursue. Wouldn't it be great if we could all say that either side wasn't afraid of the other and ourselves? It seems the only way is more war and death, revenge against another human being and social system that has more similarities than differences with the other. Pray that everyone with a decision to attack in retalliation and kill the young, grows a mouth that speaks peace and extinguishes any shout for war. I'm sorry for all in between these two systems, the only people hurt are the casualties who are just looking to have a family, a home, a job and to serve their god under whichever name that god goes by. We're all human...let's start acting like it.

This policy of "raising a flag" here and there to bleed away the assets of the USA seems to mirror the actions Osama is accusing the Americans of. If Osama knows that "tricking" American generals into chasing after him...then he also knows that the locations he raises a flag at will suffer. Raising an al-Qaida flag in the mid east is like painting a big sign up that says "Bomb Here". Yes he will cost American's money but he will cost inoccent people their lives. And who will these people blame? America, because they dropped the bombs. He is hiding behind thousands of innocent civilians and tricking them into fighting for him. Osama speaks of wisdom...but how wise is it to reveal your stratagey to defeat your enemy to the public? This is a system of revenge...look at the Civil War that was fought in the United States years ago. At one point both sides just had to concede that the fighting must stop...and to lay aside their differences and get on with living instead of dying. If the North and the South were still trying to kill each other today???...think how chaotic the US would be? I think it would be more like the mid-east. Look at the battle in Falluja right now? Did not the US and Iraq forces try to talk them out of fighting? Yes they did. But they chose fighting and death instead. Osama makes no statment of peace...he only makes a statment of revenge. And until peace is decided over revenge then the people of this world will continue to suffer.

With regard to 911 I believe there is truth and deception on both sides. I cannot believe that once the hijackers had taken control of the planes they did not clearly state their intention. I in no way condone the hijackers action I infact believe them to be cruel and savage but America I believe is now in the grip of fear, a fear created by 911 but a fear which is carefully fed and cultivated by the American Govt.

Much in the same way Ian Paisley stirred up the Protestants of Northern Ireland in the 60's.

Maybe the minutes before the crash have been explained if so could somebody tell me where I can find this information?

America I admired and regarded as the bastion and founder for freedom of speech and land of the free but I can no longer feel this way about it. I mourn for America you have lost so much in such a short space of time and not all at the hand of Bin laden

Posted by Andy @ 11/11/2004 03:14 PM CST

I think some of the posters may be missing the point, which was, for Bin Laden to post a message, period, of any sort. The CONTENT of the message is (if you take it seriously) almost demented. But the POINT is the message itself, showing that Bin Laden is free, and still fighting. It's a kind of "show-the-flag" operation designed partly to attract recruits, and (maximally) to get Bush re-elected. And of course, if it's maximal intent does succeed, that's good for Bin Laden too, because Bush's undiscriminating policies in turn attract new recruits to Jihad. The war against modernity cannot in the long run succeed; but in the short and medium term they still have the potential to cause much pain and suffering. Bin Laden's message's other point is to show he's still engaged in jihad, he's not given up.

Who does osama think is threatening? We are all free people and in fact freer than him in his ideas of endless war and lack of tolerance. Look at how he used to treat his taliban women and non moslem foreiners- was that freedom?

Have your seen the recent OBL video?? Just compare it with OBL older pics. Its not OBL!! Can be distinguished from the hands, wrist size, fingers type,
face, beard, beard hairgrowth patterns, jaws, contours of face, eye brows and top of it all, the way head grear is worn. It is not him, no doubt. He even can't be alive. A man who was on dialysis three years back and was undergoing renal failure can't be alive today in the rugged terrain of Afghanistan without medical aid. Just ask some doctor. Dialysis procedure is itself so
stressful; it would kill. US wants the demon to live on. To serve the purpose they want
the ghost to serve. Al-jazeera TV such a symbol of free journalism in Qatar, the US Owned & Operated state!! Come on! use your common sense!

Bin Laden talks about the money we've spent and what they have spent, it seems to me that is a message saying we care more about the people and peace over there then him. We, the people of OUR GREAT COUNTRY, THE USA will stick together and no matter how much it cost, YOU WILL GO DOWN!! We will never believe that it was us who started this, WE STAND BEHIND OUT GOVERNMENT, It is you who is killin all those incent people, ours and yours!!

So Ben Hiding lives? Maybe, Maybe not. A clever double no doubt! That which propels Americia is not fear but is the opposite. The Koran is based loosely upon the old Hebrew religion which in its christian reformed enity we live now in piece. The Koran must be reformed before the more powerful old testament once again rises.

Certainly Osama's last taped message has sent mixed signals thruought the world. There were no indentifiable purpose in any of his statements nor aggresivenes compared to his prior visuals.
The one person who i may say has benefited from the tape, would be Mr. Bush himself.

All self-righteous leaders or followers of the "Great Allah"need to be told is their allah is no match for America's God. As our soldiers march through the streets of Fallujah,Bagdad,Mosul, wherever in Iraq/Afgahnistan screaming come and get me to urge the resistants to show themselves, they need to be hollering "when i see your allah, i will laugh because my God is love, not revenge, and America is blessed because of God, and because we do not worship allah, but God and look who is more prosperous, powerful, free. Our God did not put us in a land of sand and masks. We are in a land of pride and plenty.Plenty of beauty, prosperity, joy, love, freedom. We are prosperous because of our God, not allah!!!! they are already mad at us, and think we are liers.tell them they have been misinformed thousands of years and will never win. battle of wits vs battle of weapons????who will come unarmed? they have been fighting thousands of years and no one has ever really won, shouldn't that say something? does Bin Laden really have that many followers? I doubt he has an army left, but for all the soldiers in Afgahnistan, i hear very little about your fight, but Bin Laden (???) still crying about America so you must be doing a great job. thank you

Unfortunatly, the Holy War of the Middle East has been fought for thousands of years and will continue to be fought until Jesus Christ Himself returns and sets His feet on the Mount of Olives. Thus bringing forth His millinial Reign. All the warring in the world will not bring it to an end 'til then. And on that day ALL WILL RECOGNIZE JESUS CHRIST AS THE LORD OF LORDS AND THE KING OF KINGS. "Even so, come quickly Lord"

There is a fundamental flaw in most of the arguements being posted. Most of these responses seem ignorant to the millenia long battle that has been fought in the middle east, a war for a 'holy land' that dates back to the crusades. After multiple attempts, after the expulsion of the Ottomans from Europe, up to Beirut and Lebannon- another important thing that seems to be constantly forgotten is who trained, equipped and bankrolled the early days of the Taliban and Al Qaida. It was America, most specificly Bush Sr, as CIA head- Rumsfield, Cheney, Wolfowitz, all of those guys have hands in that creation. Another element to remember is that if we are certain Saddam had WMD's, let us not forgot that we have the reciepts, per it was us the assisted Iraq against the Iranian Ayatollah. The northern Kurds Saddam gassed were gathered per our instruction and promise to aid in the rebellion. While it is hard to expect people to give up their own personal, selfish reasons for not being realistic and honest about the conditions that have attributted to today's current environment- we will have no selfish excuses that will suffice if an equally honest and realistic solution is really to be found.

Posted by Spencer @ 11/17/2004 01:24 AM CST

Come on, people, don't be so ignorant. What Osama is saying is true. "Destruction is freedom and democracy, while resistance is terrorism and intolerance." The US has no mercy when it comes to foreign policy. The government is in it solely for the economic benefits. I'm not talking conspiracy, because it is true. The reason that we supported those terrorist groups against the communists was because we didn't want communism to spread. We were more worried about the capitalist interests of the United States and continuing our monopolies and monopsonies that we had on all of these countries. We were willing to do anything to stop this spread, including arming and training people that we knew we could coerce into killing for us. And they did. But then they realized that we were corrupting their religion. In Iran, the Shah was adopting Western ideas and culture, including seduction and sexual acceptance. The people didn't approve, and overthrew him. In Saudi Arabia, the corrupt Saudi family is siphoning off billions of dollars a year for their own benefit, ignoring the fact that the country was founded on Islamic tradition. The people, and bin Laden, see are against the Saudi family and see how determined the US is to back them up, even putting the US military on the streets. bin Laden has vowed to overthrow the Saudi royal family. He then added the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to gain more supporters in the Muslim community. Bin Laden was wrong about one thing though. The security of our nation is not in our hands, but in the hands of the government, which is now so powerful that it is not a democracy anymore.

I lived and worked in central america for many years. We were not spreading democracy as we
claimed but death and distruction. We controlled the elections and we kept much of what we did out of the US press.

Bin Laden is a foolish coward. He speaks of a country but he has been banned from every nation; he is a man without a home. The 19 cowards walked around free men in America for years, brainwashed like puppets with only the single thought of killing themselves to enliven their wooden heads. They lived amongst people who treated them as equals only to harbor unspoken hatred, lacking the intelligence to understand that every resource to gain their political aim rose each day with the sun. They never had the courage to walk into the twin towers to meet the people they secretly planned to kill by theft, deceit, murder and treason. I don't accept their choices and neither does allah. Allah is great, but the fate of these cowards will never leave this planet for we will decide and our will shall be bound in heaven and on earth. Bin Laden and his coward emissary bandits of hatred offer no diplomacy, no representation of anything or anyone beyond a small gaggle of psychopaths whose anger is rationalized by self-aggrandizement and distorted theology. Fools. The security he demands is unfulfilled because he is of a lineage that has been in conflict for milleniums. The moment I saw the World Trade Center aflame, I said, 'the Jews and Arabs are at it again'. They have been fighting since the days of Abraham, the longest running fued in history. Both want to claim the same land, both want to claim the right to being chosen of god, both want to win the father's inheritance and both demand the unconditinal surrender of their mortal foe brother. Sibling rivalry gone mad (that is mutally assured destruction and you can be certain that if the world stands by, the world will witness their final act of violence). Their insanity insists that the world around them be drawn into their conflict. It is unending and will never be resolved because it is based on malnurished beliefs in the unreal. There is no reasoning with these idiots, they live the lives of fools. Bin Laden's statements are the brandishing sword of hatred, insecurity, confusion and shame. These Islamic radicals leave no option but to be hunted and killed and I have no doubt that Allah is most willing. By the way, money is no object -- it is a deductible expense. We consider it a cost of doing business in the world to underwrite the eradication of barbarian misfits. I wouldn't be too impressed by the price tag on your head Mr. Bin Laden. To you it will be as burning coals. I pity such foolery. You can forget having any meeting with Allah. You haven't even learned the basics -- there is nothing worth saving in your miserable life, much less the minion idiots who have been swayed by your insane zeal. Your death will only serve as an object lesson for our children and the sincere who will survive you and testify against you to your utter disgrace.
