In 1967 I checked in to a military draft center in Damascus to get my military service identification papers. I was 19 then. After rough medical examination by a doctor, they gave me my ID booklet. I realized that a paper clip was attached to my portrait picture in the wrong place. It was covering my lips. I told a sergeant there about it, but he said it was not a problem. All these years since then I was thinking whether I should remove the clip, but was afraid to do so because they would accuse me of forging the document. Yesterday I tore up the document, since it is no longer needed for renewal of passport or anything else. I used to think about it as a dog-muzzle that would keep me silent and deprive me of free expression.
