Sit-down Protest in Damascus03/10/2004 Fifteen hundred Syrian intellectuals from the opposition elements signed a petition asking president Bashar Al Asad to cancel the emergency laws that were promulgated in 1963 when the Al Baath party seized power in Syria after a military coup. They also demanded the release of political prisoners and permission to create political parties and freedom of expression. On this past Monday 8 March they decided to gather before the parliament building in Damascus and make a sit-down protest there. The police attacked them and arrested 30 of them and the others fled. Three foreign reporters were arrested and their cameras were confiscated. An American diplomat who was there watching the scene was arrested also. After about 3 hours all of them were released but without the videotapes. Had this incident happened when the late President Hafez Al Asad was alive, the arrested people would have suffer horrible torture and would have died while in interrogation.
