Vendetta illustrated09/01/2003
Walter Pincus of the Washington Post lays it on the line for us: It's hard to avoid that impression lately, isn't it? Recently, American soldiers began putting up wanted posters in Baghdad. Uday and Qusay are no longer wanted, but there they are, just below Saddam, with X's through their faces. As if to say, two down, one to go. Millions of dollars were paid for their scalps, just as there are millions of dollars on Saddam's head, but to my knowledge, not a penny is being offered towards finding the elusive WMD, supposedly of such grave concern to the Bush Administration. So, is this entire affair really just a classic family vendetta in the guise of international conflict? Was it really unavoidable that Uday and Qusay got rubbed out? Did they really put up so much of a fight that killing them was the only way to go? Gosh, shucks, just couldn't be helped? Even though our forces are using tear gas in other situations, but preferred anti-tank missiles that one time? Could be. CENTCOM courteously provides us with an up-to-date list of the status of the 55 Most Wanted, aka the deck of cards.
It doesn't provide totals, but I will. Sixteen are still at large. Three surrendered. Thirty-four were "taken into custody." Just two, Uday and Qusay, are dead. Draw your own conclusions...
